Korean Beauty Routine

Korea has some of the most demanding beauty consumers in the world with a tremendous appetite for skincare. This makes Korean cosmetics extremely innovative and at the forefront of the beauty world. It is a culture of cosmetics with a beauty routine.

The  Korean beauty routine might appear lengthy and cumbersome at first glance and while it may take a little longer than your usual routine, it results in a healthier skin complexion over time. Layering products is key in the Korean beauty routine. Rather than relying on one thick cream to do all the work, the belief in Korea is that layering products allow the skin to breathe and avoids clogging the pores.

  • Cleansing

DEEP CLEANSING

The Korean beauty routine starts with a double cleansing: an oil cleanser first, followed by a water based cleanser. While the oil-cleanser is primarily a night-time treatment, some people like to use it also in the morning to help get a better start to the day. The third and last step for cleansing is exfoliation, to be performed once or twice a week, or as needed.

  1. Make-up remover and oil cleanser: this is the first step of the routine. Removes make-up and draws out oil-based impurities like sebum, SPF and pollutants. Oil cleansing gives its best for oily skins.
    Gently massage adding lukewarm water and rinse.
  2. Water based Cleanser: dissolves water-based impurities such as dirt and sweat that the oil cleanser may not pick up. Could be used used at nighttime after the oil cleanser or as a single step in the morning to remove nighttime impurities.
    Apply an appropriate amount on face, massage and rinse with water.
  3. Exfoliation: cleans pores,  removes dead skin cells for brighter and smoother skin. Regular exfoliation helps other products absorb better and more efficiently. Thanks to exfoliation, skin looks more consistent and bright with narrower and less visible pores.
    Gently exfoliate with a focus on the visible pores and on the nose.
  • Prepare

TONER

Toner is the ultimate product for preparation of the skin – a foundation of K-Beauty and a step that should never be skipped. Toner removes any leftover residue from cleansers, repairs the skin’s natural barrier and helps prepare the skin to better absorb the ensuing treatments.

Moreover, the toner helps to balance skin’s pH levels. Thanks to toner, your skin will act like a sponge!

Apply on the entire face and gently pat for absorption. Can also be applied with a cotton pad.

  • Nourish

If you think of your toner as the first layer of moisture, then the essence is the second. These products are typically thinner in texture, and some even feel watery. They penetrate the skin at a deeper level and aid with the absorption of the next  products.


ESSENCE
Essence is a hybrid between a toner and a serum. It hydrates the complexion while aiding cellular turnover for a youthful appearance. Essence products are lightweight and packed with a concentrated blend of hydrating, anti-aging and complexion enhancing ingredients. Essence is at the heart of the Korean Beauty Routine: while stimulating cells it brings extra-hydration leaving skin feeling smooth.
Apply on the entire face and gently pat for absorption.

TREATMENTS
Emulsions, serums and ampoules are designed to directly treat specific skin concerns like acne, fine lines and hyperpigmentation. Serums and ampoules are highly concentrates products.

The emulsion layer is often a bit more viscous than previous layers, and starts to build richness and sheen.
Apply on the entire face and gently pat for absorption.

MASK SHEETS
A real joy for the skin and mind. A moment of daily regeneration and relax. The mask sheets are the soul of Korean Beauty. As concentrated versions of an essence, the sheet allows the skin to fully absorb the nutrients and moisture. Mask sheet have become ubiquitous and very easy to find. Mask sheets take 15-20 minutes and can be done as frequently or infrequently as one likes. Favorite time to use could be after a long day, after a medium or long-haul flight or before a special event.
Remove after 15-20 minutes and gently pat for absorption.

EYE CREAM
The skin around the eyes is the thinnest and most delicate on your face. Eye creams are concentrated and formulated to be extra gentle and non-irritating. They hydrate and prevent dark circles, puffiness and crow’s feet. A trend in South Korea is to wear eye cream as a night moisturizer all over the face.
Apply on the eye area and gently pat for absorption.

  • Protect

MOISTURIZER or CREAM

It may seem a little too much to add another layer of moisture. However in the traditional Korean beauty routine, cream is used to seal in moisture and smooth skin. All the layers before are then sealed and long lasting all-day hydration is ensured.

The cream used at night may be replaced by a sleeping pack that will restore and deeply nourish skin.

SUN PROTECTION

Sun protection is the last step. It protects the skin from damaging UV rays. Protecting the skin on a daily basis from UV rays will avoid development of dark spots, wrinkles and fine lines.
